USVs Are a Survey Platform, Not a Shortcut

Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) are now a practical option for many hydrographic and nearshore survey scopes. They can reduce people-on-water exposure, access shallow or constrained areas, and run repeatable survey lines with consistent line keeping.

A USV does not automatically make a survey cheaper or better. The value comes from matching the platform to the scope, water depth, weather window, payload, communications, approvals, and required data quality.

What Is a USV?

A USV is a surface vessel that operates without crew onboard. In survey operations, most USVs are remotely supervised and follow pre-planned routes, with operators monitoring navigation, safety, survey progress, and data quality from shore, a control centre, or a support vessel.

Typical payloads may include SBES, MBES, side scan sonar, lidar above water, cameras, GNSS/INS, sound velocity sensors, environmental sensors, and telemetry systems.

If a support vessel is required for the full operation, the cost advantage can reduce quickly.

Data quality still needs the same discipline as any other hydrographic survey: offsets, calibration checks, GNSS/INS, sound velocity, tide/reduction method, coverage checks, crosslines where required, and acceptance against the nominated specification, such as IHO S-44 where applicable.

The Best Use Is Often Hybrid

For many offshore and nearshore projects, the best result is not “USV versus crewed vessel”. It is a hybrid strategy: use the USV for shallow, repetitive, or lower-risk sections and use the crewed vessel where payload, endurance, weather tolerance, or onboard expertise matters more.
