Survey Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Survey Engineer / Survey Technician to support hydrographic, geophysical, and geotechnical survey operations in offshore environments. The role involves mobilizing, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting survey equipment, ensuring high-quality data acquisition, and supporting data processing and reporting. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with survey sensors, software, and offshore survey techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Survey Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Mobilize and calibrate hydrographic, geophysical, and geotechnical survey equipment, including:
- GNSS positioning systems
- Multibeam and single-beam echosounders
- Side-scan sonar
- Sub-bottom profilers
- Magnetometers
- USBL and INS positioning systems
- CPT and vibrocore sampling tools
- Ensure proper setup, interfacing, and integration of survey equipment with data acquisition systems.
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on survey hardware and software.
- Verify equipment performance and calibration before and during operations.
- Assist in vessel and equipment mobilization/demobilization.
Data Acquisition & Processing
- Operate and monitor real-time survey data acquisition using software such as Qimera, Hypack, CARIS, EIVA, SonarWiz, or similar.
- Conduct quality control (QC) checks on acquired data, ensuring compliance with project and industry standards (IHO, IMCA, OGP).
- Apply necessary corrections (positioning, sound velocity, tide, and motion) to improve data accuracy.
- Assist with preliminary data processing and visualization for immediate client review.
Project Execution & Reporting
- Support the Party Chief or Client Representative in executing survey plans efficiently.
- Maintain detailed logs and reports of equipment status, calibrations, and survey operations.
- Work closely with surveyors, geophysicists, and offshore teams to ensure smooth operations.
- Ensure all work adheres to HSE (Health, Safety, and Environmental) regulations and safe working practices.
- Assist in compiling final project documentation and data deliverables.
Qualifications & Experience
• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Hydrographic Surveying, Geomatics, Geophysics, Marine Science, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience in hydrographic, geophysical, and geotechnical survey operations.
• Familiarity with offshore positioning and survey principles.
• Working knowledge of survey equipment (multibeam, GNSS, INS, USBL, SBP, side-scan sonar, magnetometer, CPT, borehole sampling).
• Proficiency in survey software (Hypack, Qimera, CARIS, EIVA, SonarWiz, or similar).
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in offshore environments under rotation schedules.
Preferred Certifications & Requirements
- Offshore survival (BOSIET/FOET) and offshore medical (OGUK or equivalent).
- GWO certification (if applicable to offshore wind projects).
- Experience with ROV, AUV, and USV surveys is an advantage.
